It is dotted with coastal palm trees, striking beach resorts and scintillating surroundings.  Hikkaduwa is a preferred location for holidays in Sri lanka as its waters offer safe swimming most of the year as well as good snorkelling. There is also a short period where waves are good enough for beginner surfing. Best visited: October-April



This North Eastern beach has always had a connection with the legend of Sinbad the sailor. Trincomalee is a picturesque natural harbour and white sand beached stretch north and south of this town – Uppvelli, Pigeon Island & Nilavell to the north and Passekudah to the south offer the idyllic beach holiday in Sri Lanka. This is also a great location for whale and dolphin tours, snorkelling and water sports. The North East is also a good location for a quieter holiday in Sri Lanka. Best visited: March-September



One of the most fascinating and picturesque beaches in Sri Lanka, Weligama stands for Sandy Sweep. It is a fishing town famous for its stilt fishermen offering vacationers a memorable holiday in Sri Lanka free from the hustle and bustle of the busy city life. Also located in the area are the beaches of Mirissa, Unawatuna and Koggale. Best visited: October-April



Arugam Bay

This is the epicentre of those keen to do a bit of surfing on their holidays in Sri Lanka. Accommodation here tends to be more suited to back packers and a few three-starish properties. But this will change over the next 1-2 years as tourists numbers are on the rise. The surf is good for beginners to intermediates. Best visited: April – November. Surfing swells are best May-September.
